The project’s purpose was to propose a general design research for the construction of a new bridge on the Thermaikos gulf which is located near the coast of Thessaloniki. My team and I chose to focus mainly on a good aesthetic result over the final cost as the project itself was for educational purposes and was going to be used in a presentation for university. We decided to go for a cable-stayed bridge with special suspension mechanisms inspired by the famous rio-antirio bridge because the environment was similar and we had to account for air pressure and seismic activity in the area. Even though we ended up with an exaggerated aesthetical result for the final design, the supposed final cost wasn’t as big as we anticipated from the beginning.
Part of the project was to also develop some architectural plans and describe details of the bridge such as the layers of the deck and its parts underneath it. Apart from that we also included detailed imagery of different sections of the bridge and we calculated a list of the different types of concrete strengths that would be used along with their amounts. Ofcourse such numbers would only come close to reality by calculating the overall structure in the final stages of an inclusive research with a more precise structural integrity analysis. Therefore, our calculations were only theoretical and had a large margin of error.
